The Critique

Because Sunni Islam holds the sahihsahih“Authentic.” The highest grade of hadith reliability; also the name of the two most authoritative collections (al-Bukhari and Muslim).Full glossary → hadithhadithA report of Muhammad's words, actions, or tacit approvals. The hadith corpus is the second source of Islamic law after the Quran.Full glossary → to be revelation-adjacent (Muhammad “does not speak from desire,” Quran 53:3–4 as traditionally applied), their scientific content is internally fair game: if a fly falls in your drink, dip it fully, for one wing carries disease and the other its cure (Sahih al-Bukhari 3320); the sick were prescribed camel urine to drink (Bukhari 233); black seed cures every disease except death (Bukhari 5688); fever is from the heat of Hell and is cooled with water (Bukhari 3261); Adam was created sixty cubits (about 27 metres) tall, and people have been shrinking since (Bukhari 3326) — contradicted by the continuous skeletal record of human stature.

Common Muslim Responses

Responses include: occasional studies are cited hopefully (antibacterial peptides on flies; thymoquinone in black seed); camel urine reflected era-appropriate folk medicine permitted, not revealed science; some modernists simply demote such reports to non-binding or question isolated transmitters even within the Sahihayn.

Counter-Rebuttal

The critic notes the asymmetry: when a hadith can be made to sound prescient it is broadcast as a miracle of prophetic knowledge; when it is indefensible it is reclassified as folk medicine or “not part of the message.” But Bukhari’s fly hadith states a precise etiological claim (disease on one wing, cure on the other) with no scientific support, and the Adam report is unambiguous and falsified. Either the sahih corpus carries prophetic authority or it does not; Islam’s traditional epistemology says it does, and that epistemology is what the internal critique tests.
